Treating Acne Scars with Microneedling: A Comprehensive Approach

Living with acne scars can affect your confidence and self-image long after breakouts have cleared. At West Asheville Aesthetics & Wellness, we understand how these visible reminders can impact your daily life. Microneedling has emerged as one of the most effective treatments for acne scarring, offering remarkable improvement for many types of scars. This minimally invasive procedure stimulates your skin’s natural healing response, promoting collagen production that gradually fills and smooths scarred areas. Our inclusive medical spa welcomes clients from all backgrounds who are seeking solutions for acne scarring, with personalized treatment plans designed for your unique skin needs.

Understanding Different Types of Acne Scars

Acne scars come in various forms, and identifying your specific scar type is crucial for effective treatment planning. Each type responds differently to microneedling therapy:

Atrophic Scars (Depressed Scars)

These common scars appear as indentations in the skin and include:

Ice Pick Scars: Narrow, deep punctures that look like tiny holes in the skin. Microneedling works effectively on these by stimulating collagen production in the deeper skin layers, gradually filling the depressions from the bottom up.

Boxcar Scars: Wider depressions with defined edges, often found on the cheeks and temples. The controlled micro-injuries from microneedling trigger new collagen formation around these scars, softening their appearance over multiple sessions.

Rolling Scars: Wave-like depressions that give skin an uneven texture. Microneedling helps break down the fibrous bands that pull down on the skin’s surface while encouraging fresh collagen development.

Hypertrophic and Keloid Scars

These raised scars result from excessive collagen production during healing. While microneedling is typically more effective for atrophic scars, it can sometimes help improve raised scars when used as part of a comprehensive treatment approach. Our providers carefully assess whether microneedling is appropriate for your raised scars during your consultation.

How Microneedling Works Against Acne Scars

During a microneedling session, a specialized device creates thousands of microscopic channels in the skin. This process:

Triggers your body’s wound healing response, stimulating new collagen and elastin production

Breaks down existing scar tissue, allowing for reorganization with healthier skin cells

Creates channels that allow deeper penetration of healing serums applied during treatment

Encourages cell turnover, revealing fresher skin with improved texture

The beauty of microneedling lies in its ability to harness your body’s natural healing abilities rather than simply masking imperfections. The controlled micro-injuries prompt your skin to rebuild itself, addressing acne scars from within rather than just on the surface.

Your Treatment Timeline: What to Expect

Improvement from microneedling follows a predictable pattern, though individual results vary based on scar severity and skin type:

Immediate to 48 Hours Post-Treatment

You’ll experience mild redness and possible swelling, similar to a sunburn. This is a normal response indicating the treatment is working. Your skin may feel tight and sensitive.

3-7 Days After Treatment

Initial healing completes as redness subsides. You may notice immediate improvements in skin texture and tone, though scar improvement takes longer.

4-8 Weeks After Treatment

This is when the magic happens below the surface. New collagen forms and remodels, gradually improving scar appearance. You’ll begin noticing significant texture improvements.

Complete Results

Most clients require 3-6 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart for optimal results. Significant improvement is typically visible after 3 treatments, with continued enhancement through the full series. Maintenance treatments may be recommended annually to preserve results.

Enhancing Results: Combination Therapy Approaches

For many clients, combining microneedling with complementary treatments yields superior results for acne scarring:

RF Microneedling

Our advanced radiofrequency microneedling delivers heat energy alongside the physical needling, enhancing collagen production and scar remodeling, especially effective for deeper scars.

Chemical Peels

When scheduled appropriately between microneedling sessions, our Glytone Peels or DMK Pro Alpha 6 Layer Peel can address surface pigmentation issues while microneedling tackles textural concerns.

PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin) Therapy

This advanced technique uses your body’s own healing factors, applied during microneedling to accelerate results and enhance healing. The growth factors in PRF provide additional “building materials” for skin regeneration.

DMK Enzyme Treatments

These specialized treatments complement microneedling by improving overall skin function and health, creating an optimal environment for healing.

Is Microneedling for Acne Scars Right for You?

Microneedling is suitable for most skin types and tones—an important advantage over some laser treatments that may cause pigmentation issues in darker skin. However, certain conditions may require postponing treatment, including:

Active acne breakouts or skin infections

Recent sun exposure or sunburn

Certain autoimmune conditions

History of keloid scarring (requires careful evaluation)

During your consultation at West Asheville Aesthetics & Wellness, our skilled providers will assess your skin condition, discuss your goals, and determine if microneedling—alone or in combination with other treatments—is your best path forward.
