Beyond BOTOX®: Comprehensive Guide to Restylane Recovery and Aftercare

Getting Restylane injections is just the first step in your beauty journey. What you do in the hours and days after treatment can make all the difference between good results and great ones. I’ve guided countless patients through recovery, and I’ve noticed that those who follow proper aftercare routines consistently achieve more satisfying, longer-lasting outcomes. Let’s walk through everything you need to know about recovering from Restylane and how to care for your skin to get the most out of your investment.

The First 24 Hours: Critical Aftercare Period

The day of your treatment sets the stage for how well your results will develop. Your body is responding to the filler, and these initial hours matter more than you might think.

Right after your appointment, you might notice some redness, swelling, or tenderness at the injection sites – that’s completely normal. Apply cold compresses (not ice directly on skin) for 10-minute intervals to reduce swelling and discomfort.

Avoid touching, rubbing, or massaging the treated areas unless specifically instructed by your provider. Your filler needs time to settle, and unnecessary manipulation can shift the product or increase swelling.

Skip your workout for the day. Exercise increases blood flow, which can worsen swelling and potentially displace the filler before it sets. Your gym session can wait until tomorrow – or better yet, the day after.

Sleep with your head elevated the first night. This simple adjustment helps minimize fluid accumulation and reduces morning puffiness, especially for treatments in the under-eye or cheek areas.

The First Week: Supporting Your Results

As your body adjusts to the Restylane, following these guidelines will help minimize side effects and support optimal filler placement.

What to Avoid

Put the cocktails on hold. Alcohol dilates blood vessels and can worsen bruising and swelling. Skip the drinks for at least 24-48 hours after treatment.

Hold off on that facial or massage. Any treatments that involve pressure or manipulation of the face should be postponed for at least a week to allow the filler to integrate fully with your tissues.

Be gentle with your skincare routine. Now isn’t the time for aggressive exfoliation, retinol, or acids. Stick to gentle cleansers and moisturizers for a few days.

Extreme temperatures can prolong swelling, so avoid very hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and hot yoga for about a week. Similarly, protect yourself from intense cold if you’ve had lip injections.

What to Do

Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water helps your body process any minor inflammation and supports the hyaluronic acid in the filler.

Use arnica montana if you’re prone to bruising. This natural remedy can help reduce the appearance and duration of bruises when used as directed.

Continue wearing sunscreen daily. UV exposure can break down fillers faster and impair your skin’s healing processes.

Long-Term Care: Extending Your Results

Once you’ve made it through the initial recovery period, these practices will help maintain your results for as long as possible.

Stick with a quality skincare routine that includes antioxidants (like vitamin C serums) to protect your skin from environmental damage. Hyaluronic acid serums can complement your fillers by providing surface hydration.

Schedule regular follow-up appointments with your provider. They can assess how your filler is wearing and may recommend touch-ups before the product fully dissipates, which often results in using less product over time.

Remember that hydration affects your results. When you’re dehydrated, even the best fillers won’t look their best. Maintain consistent water intake and consider using a humidifier if you live in a dry climate.

Pay attention to how your body responds to certain foods. Some patients notice that high-sodium foods or alcohol can temporarily affect the appearance of their fillers by causing mild swelling or dehydration.

Recognizing Normal vs. Concerning Symptoms

Understanding what’s normal and what requires attention can prevent unnecessary worry while ensuring you don’t ignore important warning signs.

Normal side effects that typically resolve within a week include mild swelling, redness, tenderness, bruising, and slight asymmetry as the product settles.

Contact your provider promptly if you experience severe pain, blanching (whitening) of the skin, unusual or spreading bruising, significant asymmetry, or signs of infection like increasing pain, warmth, or discharge.

In rare cases, vascular complications can occur. If you notice blue-gray discoloration, blotchy redness, or unusual pain, this requires immediate medical attention as it could indicate a blocked blood vessel.

Common Questions About Restylane Recovery

Most patients want to know when they’ll see their final results. While you’ll notice immediate volume, the full effect typically appears after swelling subsides, usually within 1-2 weeks.

As for returning to normal activities, most people can resume their regular skincare routine within 2-3 days, exercise within 24-48 hours, and makeup application (with clean brushes) within 24 hours, but always follow your provider’s specific instructions.
